Young Mums Peer Education

Peer education is about training and equipping young people to give a message to their peers. It lends itself very well to working with young mums who often have not completed their education because of their children. Peer education teaches the young people valuable transferable skills in:

• Presentation

• Communication

• Managing groups and discussion

• Listening and feedback

• Greater awareness of their attitudes and values and how this impacts others

• Organisation and planning

• Problem solving and using effective strategies

• Team working

• Evaluation

And most importantly it builds greater confidence.

For young mum’s who have been away from learning and education it helps them get used to using childcare and prepares them for further education or employment. It is also fun and enjoyable but leads to a qualification, which is the Pearson Level 2 Award in Peer Education. This is equivalent to a GCSE grade A-C but is done through building a folder of evidence.

How does it work?

Young mums do informal training which involves activities, discussion and group work and then evidence their learning in a way that suits them. A crèche is provided so their young children are catered for by trained professionals and lunch or food for the young women is provided as an incentive. There is some help towards transport for the young people should they need it.

Once trained the young mums design workshops about a message of their choice which they take out to schools and youth groups. Their peers then receive a message in young people’s language delivered by other young people, which generally has a far greater impact than if they receive it from an adult.

When they have completed the course the young people will be assessed and gain their qualification and also have a celebration event.

How long are the courses?

The Peer education course runs over 32 weeks (2 hour sessions) with breaks around the school holidays.

Where are they running?
